Ok well, last time I did my blog post on the same book, but there are lots of new, important characters introduced in the story. There is Mrs. French, Mr and Mrs. Wilberforce, Harley, Jed and Harriet. Mrs. French is the secretary of Jodie and Pearl's new boarding school, (where her mum works as the chef and her dad as the handyman) Melchester College. I don't seem to like Mrs. French. She gave Jodie a glass of wine (Jodie is only 14 years old) and she constantly bosses Pearl and Jodie's mum, Sharon, around. Some proof is when it says in the book "Mum still got irritated when she told her what to do". Moving on to Mr. and Mrs. Wilberforce. Mrs. Wilberforce is a oldish lady who uses a wheelchair. Her and her husband own Melchester College and they run it too. She is super nice and she always invites Pearl to come to her house and choose any books that she wants (both are MAJOR book fanatics). She has lent her books like The Secret Garden and more. Mr. Wilberforce is also very nice but he chooses favorites. Whenever Pearl and Jodie are in the room he only talks to Jodie.
Jed, is the young gardener at the school. When Jodie first came to Melchester College, she started liking him a little but then he ran over a baby badger and he wanted to poison the badger cub's family! I really don't like him because of that. He even says in the scene where he ran over the cub with his tractor "it's vermin. They all are. They're eating away at the Melchester land, making it unstable. Of course I aimed at it." Now isn't that just horrible? Unlike Jed, Harley is nice.
Harley, is a friend of Jodie and Pearl. He is in the grade above Pearl, in Jodie's class. He seems to like Jodie a bit, but he is really friends with Pearl. They sneak out at night and go badger watching for hours. One quote from a badger watching scene was "I took hold of Harley's hand. His long spidery fingers gripped mine. We sat still watching the family as the sun slowly sank in the sky." They are really good friends who are very loyal to eachother. I can tell because he says things like "I'll go behind you. Then if you trip, I can catch you". This is from a scene where Pearl, Jodie and Harley sneak into the old, almost completely broken atticks of Melchester College. He only said this to Pearl, not Jodie. Harriet is one of Pearl's closest friends in her class. They really like eachother and I think that she's nice too. People can tell that they are friends because at the beginning of the school year Harriet said "can she sit next to me, Mrs. Lewin?" when the teacher was assigning seats. Also Harriet said "you can call me Harry because we're friends now".
I think that out of all the new characters, I like Harley the best. I think that he is the nicest and cleverest out of all of the characters (other than Pearl and Jodie). This book is so good. I can't wait until the end!
