Before We Were Free
Well, even though I am reading Goodnight Mister Tom, Mrs. Deu gave us a book called Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez. I've just started reading the book but I see a few semi-big connection between the main character and me on the first page. Anita is the main character and she is from the Dominican Republic, and she is going to an American school in the Dominican Republic.
The first thing I see is that she is a girl who is not from America but attends an American school. I go to the American International School of Cyprus, and I'm Turkish Cypriot. Also, she says in the book "we are preparing skits for Thanksgiving, two weeks away. Although the Pilgrims never came to the Dominican Republic, we are attending the American School, so we have to celebrate American holidays". At this school, we do things like that. In the past few years, we've celebrated Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.
Another thing that we have in common is that Anita describes the day in the Dominican Republic as "it's a hot, muggy afternoon. I feel lazy and bored. Outside the window, the palm trees are absolutely still. Not even a breeze". In the summertime in Cyprus, it is always boiling! The air always feels sticky and hot. There is sometimes no wind outside and it feels like the Sahara Desert. However, it is great to go swimming at the beach here :)
Also, a text-to-text connection that I have is from this book to one of the stories that we read from out vocabulary book in English. I remember it being in the Dominican Republic, two girls having to leave their classroom, their class practicing for Thanksgiving, and I remember the name Alvarez.....=D.
Even though, I am going to have to read this book for Social Studies class, it sounds really interesting. Right now, Anita's cousin has to go and everyone isn't sure why. When her cousin started packing up her bag, the teacher pointed to things that Carla (her cousin) usually keeps in her desk until the end of the year (like a locker) and said "aren't those yours?" I'm interested to find out what's going to happen to Carla.

Goodnight Mister Tom
The book that I am now reading is called Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian. I know that you have already read it, so I don't think that it is necessary to explain it. Nothing big has really happened in the story so far, and therefore, there aren't that many important characters being introduced in the part of the story that I am reading. There has been a few "small" characters, such as Mrs. Fletcher, but there are only two ones that matter. These two are Mister Tom and Willie.
First, I'll tell you about Willie. He was sent to live with someone (who turned out to be Mister Tom) because of the war. He seems to be nosy and a bit curious of everything around him. He describes himself in the book as "wicked", "troublesome" and "nosy". He was even thinking "I'm such a bad boy" and "I'm dreading the moment when Mister Thomas discovers how wicked I really am". I have to disagree with Willie. He seems like a nice boy who is just an average kid, sly! I can tell that he is good at heart because he's trying to do what his mother told him to do when he left home, be good. He also chants to himself "I must be good". So far, he han't done anything bad but I'll have to see later on if what I think about him is really true.
The next character that I'll be talking about is Mister Tom. I like Mister Tom quite a lot. He had a wife named Rachel, who died, along with his son, so I think that these dreadful events softened him up a bit. He has a dog named Sammy who is also like him, caring. At one point in the book, Willie thought that Mister Tom was going to hit him, but he didn't. Later on when Mister Tom was sitting with his dog, he was talking to him and he said "Well Sam, I don't know nothin' about children, but I do know enuff not to beat 'em and make 'em that scared". Also, Mister Tom has gone to people like Mrs. Fletcher to try and get Willie some new clothes. Not only that but he also tries to make his stay better, by giving Willie his own room and feeding him lovely food. I can tell that he really cares about Willie because he is thinking a lot about what to do with him. He said "I ent 'ad much experience at this 'ere motherin lark". This tells me that he's trying to think of ways to give Willie a good time.
I think that the book is great, thank you for recommending it to me. I predict that Willie and Mister Tom will get on well and I also predict that Willie won't do something utterly terrible like he thinks he will. This book is great!

Carpe Corpus by Rachel Caine
Well, I have moved onto the 6th Morganville Vampire book of the Morganville Vampire series. There are lots of characters that I want to talk about. There is Mr. Bishop, Oliver, Amelie, Sam and Jason.
I'll first start with Mr. Bishop. Mr. Bishop is an extremly evil vampire who happens to be Amelie's father. Rumours were spread that he died long time ago but unfortunatly, those rumours wern't true. I absolutly hate Mr. Bishop and frankly I would not like to hang around him. He is crazy, wild, merciless and tactical like a wild lion. I can really tell how horrible he is when Amelie says to him "I knew you'd kill one of us personally; you enjoy it far too much. You couldn't resist." Also it says "Bishop smiled, and in that smile, Claire saw everything. He didn't want to just destroy Morganville; he wanted to destroy life, and hope, and reasons for living at all. He could win only if he was the last vampire standing no matter how many people that meant he had to kill along the way."
Now, I'll move onto Amelie. Amelie, like I said before, is Mr. Bishop's daughter. She is a very demanding but humane vampire. She can talk quietly, politely but she has a presence about her which makes you not want to defy her because you can tell that the consequences will be bad. Claire often describes Amelie as a queen such as when she says "the front row held Amelie sitting alone, dressed in a white suit so cold and perfect that it made her look like an ice sculpture, head to toe". I quite like Amelie. Before she showed no emotion but slowly she has come out of her shell. For instance she started crying when she saw Sam (they were madly in love with eachother) in pain.
Next, Oliver. Oliver was first thought of as the cool guy at the local coffee shop, but it turned out that he was one of the highest, meanest vampires around town. In a bit before the part of the book that I'm at now, he was supposedly on the bad team when it said "she had a silver leash around her neck, and Oliver was holding it.
Oliver
Claire felt hot, then cold, then very still inside. She'd come to believe that he wasn't as bad as she thought; she'd actually started to think that he was trustworthy". However, it turned out that he was faking being on the bad side. He said "I'm not on Bishop's side. He certainly has thought so since I sold myself to him the night he came to Morganville. But no. I am not his beast." I think that Oliver acts tough and emotionless but I actually think that he will not betray his side. I predict that he'll come out alright.
The third person that I'll be talking about is Sam. Sam is Micheal's grandfather. Sam is an incredibly good person. I think that he and Micheal are the only two vampires that are completely good. He was so amazing and kind but sadly, he sacrificed himslef for the sake of the town. He is now dead. I will definantly miss reading about him and I felt terrible when he died. The last person that I'll be telling you about is Jason.
Jason Rosser. How do I describe such a backstabbing, idiotic, heartless rat, oh yeah like that! Jason is Eve's brother. He is crazy. Jason never baths, is pscho and loves the idea of killing. He stinks so much in one scene the following happened " Oliver met him halfway, grabbed Jason by the throat, and slammed him down onto the carpet. "You see?...You really should have thought about the carpet; you'll never get the smell of him out of it." Yukkkkkk (he was talking to Amelie)...
Well, the book is GREAT!!! I can't wait until the end but I also can't believe that the series will be over soon :(

My Sister Jodi by Jacqueline Wilson
Ok well, last time I did my blog post on the same book, but there are lots of new, important characters introduced in the story. There is Mrs. French, Mr and Mrs. Wilberforce, Harley, Jed and Harriet. Mrs. French is the secretary of Jodie and Pearl's new boarding school, (where her mum works as the chef and her dad as the handyman) Melchester College. I don't seem to like Mrs. French. She gave Jodie a glass of wine (Jodie is only 14 years old) and she constantly bosses Pearl and Jodie's mum, Sharon, around. Some proof is when it says in the book "Mum still got irritated when she told her what to do". Moving on to Mr. and Mrs. Wilberforce. Mrs. Wilberforce is a oldish lady who uses a wheelchair. Her and her husband own Melchester College and they run it too. She is super nice and she always invites Pearl to come to her house and choose any books that she wants (both are MAJOR book fanatics). She has lent her books like The Secret Garden and more. Mr. Wilberforce is also very nice but he chooses favorites. Whenever Pearl and Jodie are in the room he only talks to Jodie.
Jed, is the young gardener at the school. When Jodie first came to Melchester College, she started liking him a little but then he ran over a baby badger and he wanted to poison the badger cub's family! I really don't like him because of that. He even says in the scene where he ran over the cub with his tractor "it's vermin. They all are. They're eating away at the Melchester land, making it unstable. Of course I aimed at it." Now isn't that just horrible? Unlike Jed, Harley is nice.
Harley, is a friend of Jodie and Pearl. He is in the grade above Pearl, in Jodie's class. He seems to like Jodie a bit, but he is really friends with Pearl. They sneak out at night and go badger watching for hours. One quote from a badger watching scene was "I took hold of Harley's hand. His long spidery fingers gripped mine. We sat still watching the family as the sun slowly sank in the sky." They are really good friends who are very loyal to eachother. I can tell because he says things like "I'll go behind you. Then if you trip, I can catch you". This is from a scene where Pearl, Jodie and Harley sneak into the old, almost completely broken atticks of Melchester College. He only said this to Pearl, not Jodie. Harriet is one of Pearl's closest friends in her class. They really like eachother and I think that she's nice too. People can tell that they are friends because at the beginning of the school year Harriet said "can she sit next to me, Mrs. Lewin?" when the teacher was assigning seats. Also Harriet said "you can call me Harry because we're friends now".
I think that out of all the new characters, I like Harley the best. I think that he is the nicest and cleverest out of all of the characters (other than Pearl and Jodie). This book is so good. I can't wait until the end!

My Sister Jodie by Jacqueline Wilson
Ok, the book that I am now reading is called My Sister Jodie. It is by Jacqueline Wilson. There are two main charcters, Jodie and Pearl, and lots of other characters like their parents. I like Pearl because she has a creative imagination and is super nice. However, even though her and Jodie are sisters, I'm not sure if I'm too keen on Jodie.
Apparently, Jodie used to be a really well behaved student, but then got in with the bad crowd of her school. Her father once said "she's no worse than her mates at school" when her mum was angry with her, but then her mum answered "Quite.....half of them are in trouble with the police". Also, it says in the book "I knew she and her friends had been caught smoking once or twice, and sometimes they sneaked out of school at lunch time to go and get chips and didn't always bother to go back again". Is it just me or is that the sort of person who later turns into someone who goes to jail, if they stay on that track? Also, Jodie lied to her parents and said that she was going to a youth club with her friends (these friends are the naughty ones) but she actually went to an under 18 club. She promised her parents that she would be back from the "youth club" by half ten (p.m) but didn't arrive until midnight. When she eventually arrived, she came back drunk!!! Her mother even yelled "drunk" at her and slapped her in the face!
You can probably see why I'm not really liking Jodie that much. I really hate that she smokes and skips school, but she also doesn't want to do it. She only does it to look cool. It even says in the book "Jodie didn't even like smoking, she told me privately; it made her feel sick and dizzy, and she also said that the school chips were much better than the pale greasy ones in polystyrene pouches from the chippy, but she was trying to keep in with Marie and Siobhan and Shanice." Those three are really bad and super tough girls.
I don't know why but I have a feeling that by the end of the book, Jodie will see the light and become a way better non-drunk teenager. I think that her younger sister Pearl will have something to do with why she changed. I am definantly going to continue reading the book because it seems good :).
